In today’s world, diversity and inclusion are becoming more important than ever before. But while we’ve made progress, we still have a long way to go in creating truly inclusive environments.
One area that needs more attention is the conversation about inclusion of people with disabilities in homes and classrooms. This book aims to provide an overview of why inclusion is important and how we can embrace differences to create more welcoming and supportive environments.
Different Is The New Cool was born because of my oldest son, Dale. He was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 5. Dale is quirky, loses focus, and is emotionally and socially awkward at times. He’s also intelligent, funny, creative and kind. His peers don’t always “get” him.
I’ve witnessed him being excluded. As a parent, you always want your child to be accepted by their peers, but it’s not always the case. I will never forget when Dale was in Kindergarten one of his classmates walked up to me and said, “Dale is my friend. He’s a little bit crazy, but a lot good!” That statement warmed my heart! It showed that he truly accepted Dale for who he was.
We’ve always instilled in Dale that he’s not defined by his diagnosis. We wanted to create a space where young people with disabilities could feel seen, valued and included. Different Is The New Cool is a family based brand that is seeking to be the pioneer of this change. This movement is based on the Core Values of Inclusion, Self-Confidence, Inspire, Collaboration, and Service. Our mission is to inspire, empower and celebrate young people with disabilities like Dale. We encourage those considered quirky, strange or odd to pursue their dreams boldly. This is done through the creation of a trendy clothing line and the sharing of our story. Regardless of your diagnosis, we believe you are not defined by it. We are all different. We are all cool. Our vision is to change the world one cool kid at a time.
